How to care for orchids in cold weather
Orchids are a popular choice for offices. They’re striking, colourful and brighten any workplace. Unfortunately, orchids have a reputation for being fairly difficult to care for and keep alive, particularly during the cold winter months. This article outlines some ways in which you can keep your office orchids strong and healthy during periods of cold weather.

Water correctly
You should avoid watering orchids with cold water. Test the temperature of the water with your hand before using it. Ideally, the water will feel neutral rather than cold or warm to your hand.
There are a few more tips to bear in mind when watering orchids.
– Don’t over-soak the soil. Soil should be moist but not waterlogged. According to Gardener’s World, over-watering is the most common way in which people kill orchids, so be sure not to overdo it.
– Use well-drained soil with a high proportion of organic matter. Sphagnum moss is a good choice for orchids.
– Ensure the pot holding the orchid is able to drain. Never leave orchids sitting in saucers of water as this can cause the roots to rot.
Keep the temperature steady
Orchids generally prefer to be kept at temperatures of around 75 °F during the daytime and of at least 65 °F overnight. If your office gets very cold during the nighttime, you might need to think about moving orchids to a warmer spot during the winter. Orchids can be damaged at low temperatures, so find the warmest part of your office and place them there when temperatures drop. The best location for orchids
Orchids tend to do well when situated near windows so they can get plenty of natural light. Be sure to avoid placing orchids very close to a window, however, as this can lead to the sun burning the plant on sunny days. You should also choose a spot that doesn’t suffer from drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations, such as near a radiator or air conditioning vent.
