How to help someone with dementia remain independent
Dementia is a progressive disease that affects the neurological system. It causes neural pathways within the brain to degrade and eventually they stop working. The symptoms of dementia can include memory loss, behavioural changes as well as issues with fine and gross motor skills, mobility and speech and language. There are a number of different types of dementia with one of the most well-known ones being Alzheimer’s Disease.
Although the disease is progressive and there is currently no cure, there are a number of ways that an individual can be supported to be as independent as possible for as long as they can. Here are a few of them to have a look at.
Mobility Aids – there is a variety of Mobility Aids that can be sourced from companies like Ability Superstore that can help support an individual with their movements and their daily activities. These include everything from wheelchairs and walkers through to grabbers and guard rails.
Preparation – you can lay out all the items that they might need to make themselves a cup of tea and leave these on the kitchen side. This can be a great way to help them feel independent without them having to worry about finding the cups, tea bags and other items.
Memory boxes – these can be a great way of helping people to visually remember things they have done in the past. These are often used in care homes where they are looking after people who are living with a number of different types of dementia.
