How to create an industrial look

If you’re looking for a laidback yet contemporary look for your home, the industrial style might be the solution. An industrial look also suits a variety of different types and eras of property. Other benefits include being able to decorate on a budget and the fact that the look never goes out of style. You can repurpose items that might otherwise have gone to landfill, so doing your bit for the environment as well. Here are some tips for achieving the industrial look in your home:

  1. Think creatively about shelving

One of the great things about industrial styles is the freedom to get creative. Taking simple, utilitarian objects and creating something interesting makes the industrial look fun. Consider using old timber planks or even plumbing parts for shelving. A bookcase can be fashioned from timber on breeze blocks or even a ladder. You might think of metal shelving as only for sheds or garages, but you can easily incorporate these into your interior design.

  1. Rustic items

Scouring the vintage shops for perfect pieces can be hugely rewarding. Salvage yards and second hand shops can often yield cheap and fascinating objects that fit the industrial theme perfectly. Anything with old wood, metal or chipped paint adds to the industrial character.

  1. Exposed brick

Exposed brick on a statement wall is a key element of industrial design but we’re not all lucky enough to have this in our property. All is not lost, however, as you can still achieve a warehouse-inspired look with wallpaper that’s available featuring brick, timber or tin. Other wall ideas include maps or murals.

  1. Plumbing

One of the areas where it’s easy to create an industrial look is with plumbing and industrial inspired tapware. Industrial design is all about functionality and unpretentious style combined, so add in some beautiful copper piping or vintage taps.

  1. Colours

Colours tend to be minimal with this style, based on a neutral palette with other colours added in to provide accents in textiles, rugs, art and crockery for example. Choose a base palette of greys in varying shades, black and white, which can be warmed up with leather or brick materials. The grey palette lends itself perfectly to incorporating metal furniture, like the Tolix Style Chair. Get your Tolix Style Chair today from Pash Classics.

  1. Get creative with storage

If your storage is on show, then you’ll want to jazz it up a little. Think about using old wooden crates, tea boxes, baskets, vintage boxes, metal tins, mason jars and anything else that can be repurposed. Old metal filing cabinets can be brought back to life with a can of spray paint and can be used in a bedroom or living room for a real industrial feel.

  1. Clever lighting

Creating industrial-inspired lighting can be a lot of fun. From stunning lamps to fun features, bare filament bulbs, ship lights or pendants enclosed in wire cages – the possibilities are endless.

  1. Be eclectic

There are many items that can be used to create industrial style, whether that’s old metal house numbers to wooden chests, crates or metal and wire. Have fun searching for items to repurpose and try to include a wide variety of different objects to bring together.
