Good news for pubs – International Scotch Day is now a thing
It may have passed you by, but February 10th this year was International Scotch Day.
The event, instigated and largely hosted by alcohol giant Diageo, saw whisky fans and producers celebrate the considerable variety, heritage and craftsmanship of one of the world’s longest-produced alcoholic drinks.
On the day itself, the Diageo company, which produces a large number of huge names from 200 sites in more than 30 countries across the globe, free of charge opened the doors to its Scottish distillery visitor centres.
For the first time, it also made the Diageo Archive available to the public allowing interested parties to find out more about the development of Scotch whisky, among other things.
An annual event
The firm now hopes to make the day an annual event, although it has said it will not necessarily fall on the same day every year.
It is hoped that other retailers, pubs and whisky-lovers generally will get behind the day as an opportunity to promote the drink. A social media campaign for the event this year had the hashtag #LoveScotch, building on a similar social media event last year.
It also involved a team of well-known lovers of Scotch taking part in fun and informative activities in trendy bars in different countries throughout the world, as well as the company’s 30,000 employees speaking to friends and family about their love of the beverage.
According to the Scotch Whisky website, the event is aimed at encouraging some younger consumers to try out the drink for the first time, as well as reminding those who may have moved on to another drink, why Scotch is so special.
A long heritage
Although sales of Scotch are reportedly up 6% across the globe, there are fears some young people still see it as an ‘old man’s drink’ which they have no interest in trying. However, there is undoubtedly a long heritage behind the production of Scotch, and it is well known as one of the most trusted spirits in the world.
Pubs taking part in the event may need the services of providers of commercial glass washers, such as https://www.247cateringsupplies.co.uk/bar-supplies/commercial-warewashers/commercial-glass-washers.
This year’s date was chosen because it is the birthday of Scotch pioneer Alexander Walker, who created one of the world’s best-selling whiskies, Johnnie Walker.
