Why an Elder Tree is Great for your Garden
One of the best loved trees in the UK is the elder tree. As one of the native trees, the elder was often dubbed the poor man’s medicine chest as it has a wide range of medicinal qualities – the leaves can be used topically to soothe sore muscles and bruises, the flowers which bloom in early summer are not only enjoyed in a summery wine but also are good at relieving sinus pain and congestion in the upper respiratory tract. The flowers can also be used as part of a face wash to reduce redness of the skin. The berries arrive in the autumn and are full of antioxidants and vitamins – just ready for the colds and flu season of the winter!
Elder trees are enduringly popular and beautiful trees and are a good choice if you want a tree for your garden. It is said to be good for keeping evil away! As well as being rewarded with the beautiful berries and blooms from the tree, as well as the medicinal qualities, the elder tree also provides wildlife with a haven – voles, caterpillars and birds all enjoy the berries in the autumn.
